Road To Respect heading for Ryanair instead of GC.
Meade told Press Association Sport: “That is the way we’re thinking at the moment — to run him in the Ryanair. We’ve had a discussion about it and we just feel he just didn’t quite get home in the Gold Cup last year. We think the Ryanair is a better option, so that’s the plan at the moment.”

Sam....just as a matter of interest.
Richard Hoyles and Mark Chapman were discussed the Triumph Hurdle on The Morning Line last week or the week before.
They were saying the race “isn’t what it used to be”.
What would they have meant by that.....have the conditions of entry been changed?

Re: The Horse Racing Thread - Part 2
I don't usually visit this thread but I heard that since 26th December that 21 horses have had to be euthanised during racing or training at the one track in the US, Santa Anita outside LA.
This is of course freakishly high and no one yet knows why but it's starting to cause a hell of a scandal with animal welfare groups.

Didn't see that, Pet. I'd guess they would be alluding to the introduction of the Fred Winter in 2005, it's over a slightly shorter distance than the Triumph but is also only for 4 y o' novice hurdlers, it was initially Listed status but was upgraded to Grade 3 handicap a few years ago. In terms of quality it's probably the weakest of the handicaps with the top mark regularly being under 140 and the mark needed to make the cut yet to reach 130. Strangely enough it's everything the Triumph used to be, a good old fashioned big field calvary charge with plenty of luck needed in running and therefore plenty of big priced winners.
The consequence for the Triumph has been the steadily declining field sizes. The first eight renewals since 2005 had fields between 23-17 runners (average field size 19.4) last six renewals had fields between 17-9 runners (average field size 14.5). In the same time frame only one Triumph winner has been a double figure price and ten of the last thirteen winners have come from the first three in the market. Smaller fields and the winners having previously contesting the main graded trials makes the Triumph a much easier puzzle to solve nowadays.

From what I can gather it's something to do with the unusually wet weather and the surface of the track which may be responsible for the horses breaking down. Or it could be the medication they're on...or possibly both.
Not a big fan of US racing.

Backed documenting today after his previous run. Would he have picked up and won with a clear run? In the orange colours.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread - Part 2
What a fiasco at Sandown yesterday.
There are two finish lines, one for the hurdlers one for the chasers.
The chase one comes first, about twenty or thirty metres before the hurdle one.
Two hurdlers went past the post together but it looked like the outside horse had prevailed in a very close photo, after a late lunge.
But the other horse was declared the winner.....by a neck.
Turns out tgey had used tge photo from the first winning post instead of tge second one
The result was overturned.....but not before bookies had already paid out on the original “result”.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread - Part 2
I bet on the first winner at Sandown, Pet. William Hill didn't pay out until about four hours later, when they honoured both winners.
Absolute farce.

Sky bet took the money back leaving a lot of peoples accounts in negative numbers because they've withdrawn.
They put the money back after a massive outcry.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread - Part 2
Was at Sandown yesterday, complete chaos in the ring following the result. Here's the official explanation from the head steward interviewed by the ever excellent Lydia Hyslop.
Why are there two winning lines at Sandown? Lydia again with Andrew Cooper, Director of Racing at Sandown.
