Thank goodness they caught it now.

A month later and we would be sweating on Cheltenham.
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

The BHA have reacted well to this, imo. Swift action last night, have kept everyone informed and made a sensible early call regarding the weekend cards.

Note the positive comments about the BHA but is there any possibility this could escalate and cause a longer postponement of the meetings?
Imagine it's some task to test all the horses, especially if the trainers are as lazy and unprofessional as one trainer I know.

If there's no racing right up to the build up to cheltenham, surely some horses won't take part in the festival??

Little point in speculating when racing will resume until results of testing are known.

Of the viruses that have serious long term consequences for a horse equine flu would be pretty far down the list, ProteqFlu and Equilis Prequenza vaccines cover the FC1 strain which all horses are required to have. The only problem that could arise is if there is a mutation that the current vaccines are less effective against. Due to the relatively small population of horses the Equine Pharma companies are slow to update the flu vaccines presumably as there is no financial advantage for them to do so.

Cheers, I sense the BHA are under great pressure.
The danger of cheltenham being cancelled will increase the pressure on everyone I guess.

Great news, racing is back. Providing horses that haven't had a vaccination against equine influenza within the last six months receive a booster vaccination they are free to run after a six day mandatory period.

Not all trainers happy with the new rules although they were warned as early as 18th Jan to make sure vaccinations were up to date as this release from the BHA shows.

And again on 25th Jan.

Latest from BHA

The BHA has today announced that it intends to schedule additional alternative races to assist trainers in their preparation for upcoming major festivals for horses that may miss out on essential prep or qualifying runs in the coming 10 days owing to the new vaccination requirements.

The additional opportunities will be scheduled on or around the weekend of 23 February, in order that horses which require vaccinations over the coming days will be eligible to run. Like all other British races they will only be available to horses who have been vaccinated within the last six months.
