"referees are shit. VAR has proven that, and that the referees who operate it are shit as well."
Aren't they the same people? One match on the field, next week sitting in the chair.

It's mixed. Most of the elite group referees are either in the middle or acting as fourth official, but some current refs do it, together with ex refs.
However, they are all shite when you look at the evidence. They just have to start using the referees review area, then at least we don't have this silly undermining of the match official. At Tottenham, Mike Dean should have had the final say on all VAR reviews after looking at the incidents on screen.
In my opinion they fucked up two major decisions yesterday. Sterling's horrendous studs up challenge on Alli and Lloris's movement off his line at the pen. The rest they eventually got right. How inconsistent is it for VAR to look at encroachment at pens, but not at keeper movement before the kick is taken.

I genuinely don't know how that Sterling one wasn't a red. I can understand a ref making a split-second decision (and possibly with an obscured view) and getting it wrong, but not a panel of people who get to watch umpteen replays.
That's the only puzzling thing with VAR for me. I think it's good that howlers can get picked up on and changed, but some of the decisions are pretty strange. How offside is implemented definitely needs looking at, when goals are being chalked off for someone's big toe being offside (like when Wolves equalised at Anfield a few weeks back).

Re: Zambo, you are the ref.
VAR getting it the neck again in the Wolves v Leicester match, but it's the law that needs clarifying.
A player is in an offside position if:
any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
If the Wolves player had been wearing size 9s and not size 10s, he would have probably got away with it. Moreover, he was not knowingly seeking to gain any advantage from his position or actions, he was moving away from the goal and the ball was played backwards. That was very harsh to rule the goal out.

Shouldn't this be the critieria? Shouldn't the decision be made on the basis that did the 'offside' part of the body provide any advantage? O

I think that is a reasonable idea, it's getting a consistent interpretation that would be the problem.
The decision at Molineux was ridiculous. His trailing heel was offside. You couldn't make it up.

A big fuck up yesterday with Spurs’s penalty. Bergwijn was going down under Engels’s challenge and it was at best a 50-50 anyway. No appeal from the Spurs players yet that cunt Atkinson went to VAR and there was a two minute delay after which a penalty was given.
I thought there was an edict at the start of the season that there needed to be a clear and obvious decision.

A clear pen. Man taken out which caused the Spurs player to follow through and play the ball. The view from behind was conclusive imo. The tossers on MOD even got it right as well

Didn't see the incident live, but managed to find a decent You tube clip.
Coote should be sacked. I think Oliver was partially unsighted (near the end of the clip)

Re: Zambo, you are the ref.
Use of the touchline monitor seems banned by the EPL whereas elsewhere it is the first option.
Var was deemed necessary because the game had become too fast .
It's like the referees don't want to make the final decision.
Uefa will tell the EPL to make full use of the monitors next season and VAR will improve.

No brainer. Oliver comes over and reviews the incident on the pitch side monitor and issues a red card. They must give the match official the final say on incidents like this. Leave the VARs with offsides. VAR has too much authority. Take encroachment at pens and keeper moving. The match official and one assistant should be able to judge that without any involvement from the VAR.

If the Ref can't go over to the monitor, slow the play down and check the angles he has missed then he is incompetent and should not be refereeing.

Steve Bruce on the late sending-off in the Palace game: “Does he have to send him off with ten seconds remaining? Could he not just give him a yellow?”
