'Crack' football teams.

Post by finchman »

Just read an old article from the early 80s when Wigan played a pre season friendly ' against crack russian side Moscow Torpedo'.

This term 'crack' seemed to be used a lot back in the day when describing eastern European sides.

Which sides today would be described as 'crack' ?

Always used it to describe top notch teams or players. Don't hear it these days however.

They're 'difficult' teams nowadays.

Honvéd with the legends dearest dear Puskás, Kocsis and so many more. Yes, Wolves beat them, but they and Hungary 1954 were fucked out of the World Cup by the the Germans.

As per, bought my old man the DVD of the 1953 game. Fuck, it's slow, but Hungary are fast and England so slow. But then they did then 7-1 in Budapest. Reality check needed.

A great club, and national team, The Mighty Magyars, so good. See Kocsis' record and Gerd Müller's. The old man, a guru on soccer, still says Günter Netzer is one of the best players he has seen. Though does like a bit of Leo. :)

As per, Scouse Rogan on Puskás is a great read. But buy it and read it:

Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

A 'crack' ex offenders team? Duncan Ferguson et al? Bit old I guess.

Think it’s also to do with Soviet and other Eastern European state intelligence officers who used to assassinate dissidents during the Cold War who were also called ‘crack’ with their cold, clinical efficiency like with the Bulgarian who had was pronged with the tip of a poisoned brolly.

Similar to how forrin football players are stereotyped as lazy mercenaries whose shoulders you can’t put an arm around but rather more complimentary.
