File Sharing Sites

Post by Roy Twing »

I've been using Dropbox for a year or so to share excel files/stocklist adjustments with a couple of business partners and it worked mostly without a hitch until the last couple of weeks, and now it doesn't seem to recognise the other invitees, in that they see my updates but I don't get theirs.
Dropbox's 'help' centre is as usual a misnomer.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this problem, or if they can recommend an alternative to dropbox?

Doesn't Google Drive do the same thing?
You send your colleagues a link and they can access the files.

I don't know much about all this cloud based stuff mark, - dropbox was recommended so I used it, and 'asked no questions', but now it's glitching so I have no choice.
Question is, is Google Drive any better/more understandable, - or is it just that I've reached that point where I've moved from nerd to computer illiterate.

I use Google drive for various reasons. To send files to people which are larger than a standard email attachment. To keep files I might need at hand whereever I am, and as a cloud based invoice system which maintains sequence on any of the several computer that I use.

You can download the app for PC and it creates a folder no different to any other folder on your computer, except that it is cloud based.

If your sending updated files to people , I think it might work by sending your clients one link and then dropping any updates into your drive folder which the same link would give access to proving the file name is exactly the same - eg constantly called LatestPrices.xls or something.

I think it might be even simpler than dropbox in the end.

I've just tested it, and it does work exactly that way.

Upload your file to Google Drive, sign in , get a shareable link , send the link to each of your clients, drag and drop any updates to your PC's drive folder ensuring the filename is kept the same and the link will download the updated file every time

I just need to be able to update and edit excel spreadsheets and enable a couple of others to do the same thing to the same files. Dropbox appeared to work until recently, but it seemed to show a different spreadsheet for me compared with what the others saw (I edited the original excel page and saved to dropbox whereas the others viewed and edited via the dropbox interface). As I said, - it worked but always felt a bit 'iffy'. It may be a coincidence that dropbox has recently rolled out a new version which constantly pushes you to upgrade to business version (ie paid for).
I'll give google play a go I think.

Do you know if the other parties can edit and/or update the files?

Yes, you can set special permissions. View, Comment or Edit.

All you need to do is make sure no one changes the filename is they have editorial access or you'll have to send everyone an updated link.

It all worked fine until I sent the file to myself (another email address from the one I sent it with) but the file that arrived didn't seem to give any way to allow editing (even though I specifically gave permission).
Clearly something I'm missing, but I'll keep persevering as it does look a better/cleaner option than dropbox

MEGA is a great site. It's encrypted too, so if you want to share kiddie porn or diagrams of shoe bombs, it's perfect.
