The Rifles at Norwich Waterfront. Mildly entertaining but not great. Confused as to some of the crowd getting overly excited and a crowd of 18-80. More interesting people watching. A Carlos 5/10.

Bill Wyman 80th birthday party in London.
Guests included Steve Van Zandt, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Imelda May, Bob Geldof, Mick Hucknall, and Robert Plant.
Cracking set list based on blues, r&b, roll and roll, and soul influences from the 50s and 60s, plus the odd Stones song.
Even Geldof didn't manage to butcher Little Red Rooster.
Can’t be arsed.

PJ Harvey, O2 Academy, Brixton

A fantastic performance, heavy on the album but with a great deal more old material than with the Let England Shake. Particular highlights were a beautiful rendition of Is this Desire? and a slowed-down version of To Bring You My Love.
I almost bumped into Mark Rylance on the way out.

Setlist

Chain of Keys
The Ministry of Defence
The Community of Hope
The Orange Monkey
A Line in the Sand
Let England Shake
The Words That Maketh Murder
The Glorious Land
Written on the Forehead
To Talk to You
Dollar, Dollar
The Devil
The Wheel
The Ministry of Social Affairs
50ft Queenie
Down by the Water
To Bring You My Love

Encore:
River Anacostia
Highway 61 Revisited
Is This Desire?
One day I am going to grow wings
A chemical reaction
Hysterical and useless

Glen Hansard- Sydney Opera House, Concert Hall (sometime last month)
Outspan from the Commitments has come a long way from the Ballymun flats. Terrific ensemble of musicians headed up by someone with the common touch. Emotionally charged, humorous and uplifting.

Crowded House- Sydney Opera House, outdoors (last Thursday night)
I'm a big fan of the brothers Finn, having seen them both solo plenty of times down the years. This was the first time I've seen their band live and it was special. The night was pretty emotional as it was 20 years to the day since they played their last gig at the same venue to over 100,000 people. That particular concert seems to hold a special place in ANZ popular culture, as does Neil Finn's no nonsense honesty and humour. I'm not a big fan of the whole nostalgia thing and although it could never compare to that show in 1996, this gig was lovely. I've been to hundreds of gigs, from club shows, to the biggest ones and have never experienced the feeling I got from being with my girl on a warm night on the harbour, listening to Four Seasons in One Day, Distant Sun, Better be home soon, Don't dream it's over etc, etc.. The only downside was that dear old Paul Hester didn't live to see it. RIP. Masterful stuff.

I'm thinking of going to see embrace in December , they're doing a show in Coventry. Always thought they were pretty decent 90s band, not great but good. Also jimmy eat world are playing some shows next month. Might try and catch them in Birmingham and visit German market on the same day.

Gig I refused to go to this evening- Coldplay at Allianz stadium, Moor Park, Sydney. Sat in the yard with a few brews listening and am happy with the choice I made- Christ they're awful.

Onwards and upwards though as I'm off to see the Stone Roses at the Opera House tomorrow and it's going to be 38 degrees. Let's hope the bastards make amends for Reading 95....

You clearly have excellent tastes in music, Eddie. Enjoy the Roses and let us know how it went.

The Stone Roses- Sydney Opera House.

Scallies, pingers, lager and rain macs in 35 degree heat and a small room. It was fucking chaos, but my word, what a night. Only criticism is they seemed to play the songs at a quicker tempo. Reni and Squire are top, top musicians!

Kasabian- Sydney Opera House.

Lad rock evolution from Leicesters finest. Greatest hits set for the sky sports massive with some new tunes confidently thrown in for measure. Not sure what it's called but one of their new ones has classic written all over it. Funky and heartfelt. Really enjoyable. It 'went off' like Pork pie roundabout on a Friday afternoon.
