On Andy Kaufman .... this is good. It's his transformation from nervous first-time-on-TV bloke to absolute self-confidence during the singing and then back again that gets me every time.



In contrast, and to demonstrate the genius of AK, here's the dreaded Jim Carrey doing the same routine in a film he made in tribute. Nice thought, Jim, but AK had a friendly face, and you felt sorry for him; JC has an unfriendly face, and just looks like the sort of nutter you try and avoid on railway-platforms late at night. Note the "actory" water-drinking, and to be honest the actory everything. AK looked round to see a friendly face, JC seems like he's looking for someone to kill
Oh, and the original audience were in on the joke right from the start of the AK routine. Typical Hollywood arrogance to think they weren't.

Oddly enough I re-watched that recently, as this thread acted as a reminder, as well as the actual Letterman appearance. I also found on Youtube the "how to use soap" tapes, with added extras.

Have you seen the doc on Netflix about Carrey's backstage footage? I think it's called 'Andy and Me'.

Watch the doc I mentioned. He genuinely believed that Andy possessed him during the shooting of the film, so much so that he met AK's illegitimate daughter, as Andy Kaufman. He spent a couple of hours with her having a father-daughter conversation.

Creepy as fuck.
