Appropriate actors in appropriate roles!

Post by VeritasVincit »

A performance of West Side Story had to be recast when a main performer quit because Maria was not played by a ‘Latina’.
A British actor refused to play in Hellboy because the character was Asian.
Scarlett Johansson was criticised for playing a trans character, and felt obliged to step down.
Tilda Swinton was criticised for playing a Tibetan character.

Does this mean that all parts in Macbeth must be played by Scots, all in Romeo and Juliet by Italians. Must Shylock and Fagin be only played by Jews. And we must scrap all films with Rock Hudson as a romantic heterosexual man.
The list is obviously endless.

I thought that these parts, and all others, were meant for actors, to act in.

I don't care what anyone thinks, But I cannot imagine anyone else playing Fu Manchu other than Christopher Lee.

I can't remember the documentary I saw, but it featured a bit about only ONE black face above the cinema/theatre..

That well known black man, Orson Welles.

Yes to all of the above. Would you dilute the paint of Michelangelo as he painted the Sistine Chapel? Let's keep things real and not get hung-up over it. You're clearly brainwashed and scared to offend.

In his defence, Orson Welles did put on a version of Macbeth, played by exclusively by black actors. So he was all for giving black actors a chance.

You have to wonder what kind of career Burt Kwouk would have had today. He got to play Chinese, Japanese, Korean and who knows what other nationalities during his career. Given his background, should he have been limited to men from North West England of Chinese ancestry - a pretty limited genre you would think.

Gary Oldman once played a midget(dwarf...whatever you call them) in a fillum called Tip Toes.

Did the casting directors look outside of England to find a realistic midget/dwarf...whatever?

We'll never know.

Makes a change, from English actors playing the well spoken villain in films. :)

Incidentally the imdb reviews on Tiptoes are pretty damning. I'm tempted to watch it now.

That's right. He was a welcome addition to Last of the Summer Wine :) Not sure if he was a Manc in that, or adopted a Yorkshire twang.

Peter Sallis, one of the most famous 'Northern' voices in Britain, was from Middlesex.

Who of course was played by US actor Charlton Heston in film.
But is it necessary to only cast alcoholics as film drunks, although Peter O'Toole fits.

Can't believe no one's mentioned the most realistic portrayal of an Asian man by a westerner ever.

From not that long ago when even Hollyweird could still take the piss out of itself.
Not now though, they are destroying themselves. Probably for the best.

Tropic Thunder, an excellent under-rated film where even Tom Cruise was great.
Proud Gammon
