My favourite Indian actor, Bollywood's very own Michael Bates. I had a belt like the one on his turban to hold my trousers up.

Lenny Henry whiting up:

And again denying a white actor the chance to do David Bellamy.

Fuck me this guy's got form: A Chinaman now.

Poor old Lenny is now against all of this as well as cultural appropriation. It must be the terms of his contract with the BBC or a threat not to be aired unless he embraces social justice.

The youngsters on here won't know what they were like or just how popular they were [20million viewers].
Of course, there was little else to watch at the time.

I dont. I wasnt alive for any of that, im an 80s child.

Its such a weird thing to think of putting on TV, I can understand watching it because theres jack shit on, but what is the thought process to actually thinking this up? Its not really funny from what Ive watched, it doesnt seem as though that was the angle, it was mainly dancing as far as I can see, so why the need to make white people black up? I genuinely cannot understand. Theres no logical steps.

Because black people on the cotton plantation were fine singers. It's a lovely tribute to those hard-working negroes
that kept up their spirits and no doubt the singing was also enjoyed by the plantation owners.

As Ricky Gervaise said before it was pointed out to him he'd better change his stance or be consigned to oblivion.
Cultural appropriation used to be called cultural appreciation - before the universities educated everyone correctly and divided us up into people who no longer interact.

Yeah, I agree with this, but that mistrel stuff makes me very uncomfortable.

It is genuinely weird.

I find a lot of stuff back then outdated and weird but it was not viewed that way back in the day.

Check out people like BB King who came from America to perform blues music to British audiences around the same time. He said it was an amazing experience to have the curtain drawn back to cheering crowds of white people who dismissed all levels of racism to appreciate his music.

There is a huge bunch of political opportunists all on the left trying to keep this myth going and use it as a political football. Normal people on the right couldn't care less and look at overall contribution.

Some make no contribution at all and get flack.

The same with Motown. Many of the artists have said that they enjoyed coming here, because they could perform and be judged on the music alone. Even now, there is a market here for black musicians, that the US has long since forgotten about.

Nat King Cole during the 1950's was forced to 'whiten/lighten up' to make him more presentable to the American audience after his records were a success on the radio and he then had to go on telly shows to promote them.
