Tommy Boyd

Post by James90125 »

Does anyone know what he's up to now days? Would be a good fit for Talk Radio I reckon, unless there's some animosity toward him I don't know about.

Pretty sure he's retired. Was running an internet station for a while, pretty sure it stopped sometime last year.

Must have been independently wealthy to do nothing of note for 15 years.

I was gutted when he got booted from TS at the time.

That Magpie gig must have been golden back in the 70s and 80s.
We have never heard much from, Mick Robertson, Jenny Hanley :wnk: , Susan Stranks or Tony Bastable since they stopped either.
Probably all lounging sipping gin slings on the private beaches of their Maldive villas bought with the Magpie gelt.

Its telling that while stolid, middle class, home county centric Blue Peter always wanted scrap such as milk bottle tops or ring pulls for the Christmas appeals - nothing as crass or vulgar as actual cash, oh God no, that would be beastly - Magpie, with its 'froed and cravated louche presenters and whiff of the council flat, went straight for the wallet. Spending cabbage only.
And while Blue Peter had an elaborate accumulator type deely topped with a Vegas style sign that lit up and sparkled like Lawnsy's thong when the target had been reached, the much more down at heel Magpie crew made do with some red insulating tape snaking down the studio corridors until it hit a crudely painted red circle.

I have visions of the Magpie presenters ripping open envelopes with appeal cash and stuffing their pockets full of pound notes and 50 new pence pieces with all the cackling gold crazed delight of post office sorting office workers in the week before Christmas.

Me too.

I loved Tommy.

Though did he not make a bit of a comeback on a Sunday night slot on talkSPORT about a decade ago?
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

Tommy and Mick were still friends - I'm sure at some point he divulged what Mick was doing these days, but I forget what that was now.

Tommy was presenter and radio director at Play Radio until 2009. He did some short term local radio slots after that. I think he was then running a company that provided in house commentary services for premier league football clubs (Edit - yes, a director of DIGITAL SPORT RADIO LIMITED until 2011). He presented a regular show on Mansize Radio under the pseudonym The Wise Man and presumably had something to do with the overall running of that station.

I don't think therefore that he's been doing nothing for the last 15 years, but he does seem to have retired from having an active public profile.
