Columbia most certainly showed us a full range of the dark arts but the narrative was fast descending into a picture of our brave boys as if they were playing in an early FA Cup tie for Corinthians in striped shirts in 1885 against the assassins and ninja's from a far off banana republic.

You mention Henderson but what about Ashley Young? He helped write the play book.

This is a World Cup Finals in a time when the dark arts have become standard in the game (in a way, they've been around since the 1930's) and England, full of players from a league that is allegedly, the best, have to be able to deal with them.

I am certainly not one of claiming this is the best World Cup ever (how do people remember the Group stage in 1986?) and much of the football for me has been frustrating and even tedious to watch but everything off the pitch looks like its been superb.

The football has improved a bit since then through the last 16 matches, although the players are so drilled and imbued with the principles and practices of possession football that even when some matches have started to open up and the game flow, the temptation to cut back, thereby completely destroying the move's momentum and allowing defenders rushing back to re-form their banks of 4, has been too strong on many occasions.

From the relative luxury of my couch, I want to see some strikes on goal as these have become few and far between.
