About twenty years ago I drove from New Orleans to San Francisco over 6 weeks. Loved every minute. Didn't have a plan. Just drove every day to somewhere new. The small towns were the best. Went with an English man's arrogance about Americans but they were some of the genuinely nicest people I've met. Some odd places though!

Went to all of these. If you have time I'd go to monument valley too. Loved that place. Stayed over in a one horse town called Mexican Hat.

The best regular road trip I've ever had to do was from New York City to the Arnot Forest, essentially doughnuts shops and great scenery.

My only road [+rail] trip of any significance.
Denver - Lookout Mountain [Buffalo Bill’s grave] - Rocky Mountain National Park [the road goes over 12,000ft] - Steamboat Springs.- Mesa Verde National Park - Leadville [Doc Holidays last shootout] - Durango to Silverton Railway [as seen on Butch Cassidy etc.] - Monument Valley [for John Ford westerns] - Arches National Park - Natural Bridges National Park - Glenwood Springs [Doc Holliday’s grave].
Granby Col.- Reno [California Flyer]. A couple of days in the casino.
Reno - San Francisco [California Flyer again].
All the usual things in SF before flying home.

Love trains. Last year did NY to Chicago, then Chicago to SF on the California Zephyr, and then a few days in Vegas before home. Was great. But still a road trip across the southern states is on the list. North Carolina to California covering all darn south.

Not really a story or exciting but the drive from New York City to Ithaca is very pretty and you drive through a gap in the hills carved by the ice age. It has the best doughnut shop I've ever been to on the way.

This was a few years ago, and having been a regular driver in UK I was more than pleasantly surprised at the fuel prices in USA.
To fill the camper cost under £25.
