Edinburgh - Weather that time of year, though not really a deal-breaker as it will likely be shitty that time of year wherever I go.

York - Only downside is probably distance from nearest airport that flies to Belfast. I don't want to spend the bulk the cost of the trip on a crappy dear as fuck train ride.

Dublin - Really easy and cheap to get to for me but ball-hair pullingly expensive for everything else.

And London - Well its London. Though I dearly do want to visit the British Museum again.

The only other thing I might do instead is visit my old stomping grounds in South Wales just to see how much has changed in 25 or so years.

Anyone any other ideas for a short break?

York.

Totally agree, Maude.

Getting there is the problem. I only have a few days and don't want to waste too much time travelling. Flights from Belfast City to Leeds/Bradford are hellish dear and Manchester is cheaper but the trains to York make the flights to Leeds look dirt cheap.

I think I might have to wait until I have a bit more time to spend in York.

Fair enough mate.

I'll be going back to Yorkshire this weekend, Harrogate though.

Been there once. It was really nice. If youre not from Yorkshire you tend not to realise that it's not all rainswept moors and hills and decaying mill and mining towns, in spite of what endlessly dreary grim TV dramas would have us believe.

The countryside around Harrogate and N.Yorks. is lovely.

It sure is. Knaresborough, the small town next to Harrogate, is a delight also.

I went to Whitby six years ago and stumbled unwittingly on that goth/vampire weekend which was quite an interesting experience. Then went up to Robin Hood Bay which was quite pleasant but this was tempered by the bitter, blustery conditions blowing off the North Sea. Had afternoon tea close to there too.

I like North Yorkshire too compared to West Yorkshire. I go up to Scarborough about once every two years as have relatives there and the drive through Driffield and Malton is a beautiful experience, especially going up the hill. Hate the A64 into and out of the town there as it's hell on earth on a hot summer's day.

Love Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay holds a special place in my heart.

They now charge to visit Whitby Abbey which is a total disgrace.

Didn't they used to?

I was there only once but think I paid something. Unless it was one of those voluntary things and I was lightheaded or drunk.

It was free until the National Trust took it over a few years ago.

Ah, it must have been a donations box or something then.

I'd go to Wales, Bas.

Although I would be in two minds about if I wanted to see what the old stomping grounds were like today or rather stay with the memories/nostalgia from the past in your brain.

Yup, Bas, how much are ferries to Holyhead? You could visit North Welsh towns like Llangollen and Conwy which are lovely.

It would be South Wales, Lawnsy.
Ferries are out as it will just be a long weekend and I don't drive anyway. Also there's no ferries to Wales anywhere near me.
I'd fly into Cardiff and get the train to Ebbw Vale. Though I would like to go up that end of Wales sometime.
