Anyone fly a microlight?

Post by Vespa »

I've been invited to fly in a microlight.

Not a great fan of engines I've got visions of being part of an inadvertent 9/11 recreation with a flimsy hang glider for lazy folk smashing into a caravan park.

Anyone fly or flown in one of these contraptions?

Nope. And as per the Emiliano Sala thread:

Ah, you spoiled it Carlo. I was going to say that Cardiff City supply them to all the playing staff to get into training .

Yes, Vespa. I've been up in one.

Family bought me a trip in one for a birthday. I loved it. Once you have a feel for it, your co-pilot/instructor let's you take over.

Go for it. I promise you won't regret it.

I'm going to give it a whirl, I'm told they are good fun and don't crash much.

Good man.

You will love it.

Only thing to be aware of is that they strap you up so tightly that it does hurt the 'family jewels' a bit!

Research from Australia suggested “Microlight fliers are about six times more likely to die for every hour flown than if they flew in general aviation aircraft.” At least 65 Microlight pilots and students died in Australia from 2001 through 2009. But that's 10 years ago, so they may be much safer now.

I wouldn't go up on a windy day though.

The lady I'm going up with goes on holiday in the damn thing. Although flying around the US in one sounds a lot more fun that buzzing over the South Downs.

I'll go swimming first. On that, I'm doing my first open water swim of the year this weekend.

You will be fine & you will love it, Vespa.

Luckily the weather forecast for Saturday has improved as the week has gone along. Dry & mainly sunny now.

Have fun!
