Insanely expensive printer cartridges

Post by Reg »

Just looked up a plain HP black cartridge on a "discount" site, and it was almost 49 quid! :o

I'm sure they never used to be this expensive.

What sort of mark-up do the manufacturers make with prices like that?

Quite a lot, I suspect.
Same with printers as it is with razors - the main bit is cheap, but the blades (ie the things you have to keep replacing) are a ripoff.

Yeah, When I googled it, someone was actually saying there is a business model based on razors.

Still don’t really understand how they can get away with such insane prices.

I had to buy some a while ago, and WHSmith was the cheapest, weirdly (was a pack, though, not just a single cartridge).

I have tried those knock-off ones where, say, an Epson printer recognises them, but they're not official Epson cartridges, and you refill them yourself, but didn't really work. Just got ink everywhere!

The razor cartel is under a bit of pressure from these 'shave club' things. In fact at least one of "big razor" has started it's own one in the States. Plus Gillette shat the bed with their now infamous recent ad campaign which made a lot of men say "fuck them" and sign up for clubs.

They bought the shave clubs.

Wilkinson Sword bought Harry's for $1.4bn.

It's cheaper to buy a new printer than a full set. Amazing.

Don't the computer chips in the ones you refill detect they've been refilled and refuse to work?
