I don't, for one minute, suggest otherwise, but I hazard a guess that I watch more of the proceedings in the Chamber than most on here have time to do, so I've seen Bercow and how snide he can be.
He seems to have taken upon himself to be chief insult thrower at the Government benches, he's done it for years, throwing snide remarks and sheer nastiness at Tory MP's yet letting the Opposition benches get away with bad behaviour willy nilly.
When he was first elected some political commentators started logging how many times he ticked off each side and came up with the stat that he ticked off the Tories far more times than the Labour side even though the transgressions by Labour were more often than not worthy of censure.
He could have controlled the House much better last week, instead he allowed Labour to behave like spoiled brats in the playground, Barry Sheerman (and others) should have been pulled up for his behaviour yet Bercow did diddly squat, and then wondered why Johnson wasn't as diplomatic as he should have been.
Yes, he has bought in innovations, not all for the better, and had he said some of the things he has to members in a four ale bar he would have got a knuckle sandwich, he knows that he can insult members at will and all they can't do anything about it.
Some of the insults and asides he throws at members are just plain childish, and done to bring attention to himself, he often glances up at the public gallery at the same time to see if the scribblers are taking notice.
The only one I seem to recall telling him he's a bully is someone who stood up to speak when the Clerk of the House was retiring, due, it was reported, to Bercow's bullying of him and he couldn't stand it any longer, Bercow sat there looking thunderous but knew he couldn't do anything but listen.
He's bought the Office of Speaker into disrepute on many occasions and I don't think he will be missed by many.

Bercow is the first televised Speaker, we don't have anything to judge him against. I do agree with you he's a huge bitch and the serious allegations about him bullying staff have never had the coverage they merit.

You very rarely see any middle ground, you very rarely see condemnation from some when he is obviously favouring Remainers and you very rarely see acknowledgement at all when he does what he is supposed to be doing.

Anyone who denies that happens are amongst the people I'm talking about.

Probably what disappoints me most on this forum in recent times.

He particularly seems to let Ian Blackford and Joanna Cherry more leeway than most, but he did pull up Blackford last week when Blackford said that Johnson was a liar, Bercow pulled him up by saying that he hoped Blackford wasn't suggesting that Johnson was lying to the House and if he was he should withdraw the remark, which Blackford did, but as with many other questionable things which Blackford in particular has said, those remarks have been heard and once heard cannot be unheard.
Bercow does what he has to most of the time, which is to keep order and make sure all members get a say, and he has bought in innovations, some to no purpose as far as I can see, but on the whole he hasn't done the Office of Speaker many favours, he is supposed to be impartial, both in his political stance as well as in the way he treats both sides of the Chamber, but on many occasions he displays his dislike of the Government side, his actions on the night of Prorogation was childish and his treatment of Black Rod was just plain disrespectful and virtually two fingers to Her Maj.

Crikey, both the deputy Speakers have slated Bercow in their nomination speeches, Rosie Winterton was particularly scathing, Bryant did have a critical comment, and Meg Hillier is really having a go at him, calling an end to grandstanding and self publicity, just waiting to see what the rest of them have to say.

Not really what Bercow would want to hear about himself, but it does show what members really think of him.

You'll here nothing but unconditional praise from those who he was impartial in favour of, and there were a lot. They won't even admit that he was impartial, and the reason for that is that they are er, impartial, and only care if things are going their way. If he'd been the other way around, they wouldn't have stopped bleating, as they haven't done since they lost the referendum.

An unbelievably daft post in all respects, so at least some things don't change.
Anyone (such as Tick) that uses 'gammon' as a racial pejorative is as much a racist as those who use the word nigger and similar pejoratively.

Lindsay Hoyle new speaker. This from Saturday and the comments, most amusing:

The fact that Sir Lindsey seems to have eyes in the back of his head was mentioned in the Chamber today  but perhaps he's in the same position as me, with two tellys, the 40" one still sitting where it was and the ne 65" sitting opposite, just waiting for a break in the weather and then I'll put the old one outside with a note saying 'please give me a good home' and I guarantee it will be gone within half an hour if not sooner .

Probably got another 20 years wear in it, especially now that Sir Lindsey and hi8s wife will be moving into fully furnished all utilities paid council accommodation. :D

Back on topic, I think he will be a totally different Speaker from the Berk, I have seen him in the Chair for some years, always seems fair to both sides, but it was commented upon that there wasn't a request from the Chair, which apparently is usual, for the retiring Speaker to be given a Peerage. although Valerie Vaz and a couple of members did make the request of the Leader of the House the during nausea inducing tributes the other day.
