Reminiscent of France's stance in the run up to the Iraq invasion, - I forget who was proven correct, and who were the liars at that time.
I must admit that I'm baffled by this seemingly suicidal rush to confront Russia, - even otherwise supposedly sensible voices in the media seem to be convinced it's the right thing to do.

As with the Iraq invasion, I can only assume that they know far more than they tell us, but we all know that that wasn't the case back then,
Anyone (such as Tick) that uses 'gammon' as a racial pejorative is as much a racist as those who use the word nigger and similar pejoratively.

the rush to confront russia is because they have been pushing for war constantly for several years now

what they have done in the middle east, attempted encirclement of china

corbyn has stated he does not necessarily believe the spooks....good on him

but the push for war is crazy

be strong, MyVlad.....be strong

Are you, Roy (& Paolo)?

You cannot have foriegn countries letting off deadly nerve agents in another country. Now you might say (reasonably) that how do we know it was authorised by Putin & the Kremlin. Well, apart from the fact that he has previous when it comes to poisoning 'undesirables' on foreign soil, the nerve agent has come from Russia. It is a Novichok agent which was developed by the former Soviet Union.
One way or another, Russia was involved. Why? Because no one else knows how to make the bloody stuff . Novichok precursor chemicals are also safer to transport and handle than ready-made nerve agents.

A for May's response, I'd say it is too timid. Putin is the type of man who will sieze upon weakness. Her response to a foreign country letting off a deadly nerve agent is imo, frankly pathetic.

But, as is always the case, it is interesting (& very telling) to see the international response. The Trump administration is fully behind UK, while Macron cannot muster the courage to stand up to Russia. For the last 18 months the liberal brigade have insisted that Trump is in hoc to Russia, whilst that nice Mr Macron was the antidote to all that. Perhaps now Hillman & Co may care to have a little re-think.

Re: Identification of the nerve agent:

Identifying the Novichok agent would have been a painstaking process, says Martin Boland at Charles Darwin University in Australia.

If someone shows signs of nerve agent poisoning, the first thing to do is to check for decreased acetylcholinesterase activity. This reveals if a nerve agent has bound to the enzyme.

Next, the specific nerve agent must be identified. A telltale sign of poisoning with sarin, for example, is unnaturally high blood levels of fluoride, which is used to make the nerve agent.

Because no standard test exists for Novichoks, defence officials may have taken fluid from the Skripals’ spinal cords, isolated the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, and analysed the structure of the nerve agent attached, says Boland. Western intelligence agencies have knowledge of the exact Novichok structures, allowing them to detect a match, he says.

He would

This has nothing to do with the spooks anyway. The nerve agent is only produced in Russia (or rather was, in Soviet Russia). No one else knows how to make it. It has been identified as Novichok. Are Corbyn & you Paolo suggesting that this scientific diagnosis is somehow wrong?

Because if it is, May would have to resign immediately if proven wrong.

Besides, I'd be amazed if Yank scientists haven't seen and corroborated the evidence before Trump announced he was behind the UK

In which case, how do explain that the nerve agent has been identified as Novichok, Rabble?

It can only have come from Russia.

One way or another, Russia is responsible.

Putin ain't one to worry too much about his or Russia's international reputation, is he?

Paolo - you know my thoughts on May. I despise her 10x more than you ever will.

I agree 100% that the EU provoked the Crimea & Ukraine crisis as well.

But you have not answered my question.

The nerve agent can only have come from Russia. Surely Russia bares (at least some) responsibility?

Something interesting which no one really has picked up on is when May made her speech earlier in the week about the nerve gas attack on the former agent and his daughter she gave a get out for the Russians by saying that it was EITHER sanctioned by the government or it was other elements that obtained the agent. The Russians could obviously have batted it back saying it was nothing to do with them or in typical parlance here 'nothing to do with me guv". Have to say that the UK government is showing itself up to be rather impotent and with so little clout other than throwing out 23 Russian diplomats and not sending the royal family to the summer's World Cup. This will have Putin quaking in his boots. I'm sure that the Russians could easily escalate the matter if they so wished.

I agree that only the Russians had access to the nerve agent.

Theresa May, Lawnsy. The woman is a walking disaster.

If she really wanted to send out a signal, all she has to do is freeze all Russian assets held in UK (or just threaten to do it)

That will get a few West London oligarchs quickly on the phone to Vlad.

Could someone have bought the nerve agent from the Russians.

Possibly. Who knows? Though the target would suggest otherwise.

But in which case, it's surely incumbent on Putin to tell the West that.

If only to warn that more of the stuff is unaccounted for.

Imagine if ISIS got hold of it?
