It sounds a humorous insult, but it is based on race, so of course it's a racist term. If the term referred to black people, you can be damn sure it would be called racist. As for other racist terms, the word "Paki" wasn't racist, because it's short for Pakistani; but it became racist, because it was used by the far right to demean Asians in general.

Have to disagree. Affluent white men with reactionary opinions are not a race. White people mocking other white people over their rosy cheeks is not racism. White lefties insulting other white people in this fashion is no more than a petty insult, and any any right winger saying that it is racist, is lowering themselves to the level of those who made it up, and cry racism at any opportunity.

I understand what you are saying and as I'm not going to shout "you are a racist" or start a campaign on Twitter. That is for the left to do; that is their domain. However, when you specifically bring ethnicity into an insult, it takes on different connotations. Calling someone a bastard, is completely different to calling someone a black bastard. And I agree that it is mainly whites who use the word gammon to insult other whites. But, as Kowalski said, this is the internet; so no one knows what colour anyone else is. That alters the dynamic the same as black people calling each other "nigger" in a matey way, is not the same as a white person saying it.

At the danger of repeating myself, I have said that if people want to use the term then fine. But they need to be aware that is an insult partly based on colour. It is a sign of the contempt, the hard-left feel for a large section of the electorate. It is the hypocrisy of using hateful rhetoric, that puts off most sensible people. When you have so many traditional Labour voters, who cannot stand them now, you would think that they would try to find out why.

Actually, I don't think the words you quote were very often meant as an insult back in the free days, and I doubt whether they'd have become so contraversial without all the race baiting down the years. It was always a stated goal to take ownership of language Royals which is exactly what they have done. We seems to accept the definition of so many words these days after they have been redefined.

In this instance they have decided the word gammon isn't racist while previously they banned words such as blackboard because it might have been racist. They banned the phrase coloured people and have now replaced it with people of colour. Even the definition of racism itself now means anything the left sees as racism. I could go on for ever but I'm struggling to think of one word which has been redefined by people from the opposite end of the spectrum. Maybe conservatism like to preserve the meaning of words as well.
