Myths

Post by Hillman avenger »

It seems to me that all around us now prevailing myths are being exposed for being just that, myths.

There's a long list about the EU , its democracy, its politics, the views of its members, its level of support, and all the rest.

A long list of myths about us, and our democracy, our economy, our identity as a nation, the quality of our politicians and political process...

All being found to be invalid on an almost daily basis.

Some of us are pleased, while others panic and cling to them despite the evidence of their own eyes. Sad.

But if you'd like a cracker listen to today's "Thinking Allowed " on R4 about council housing. Completely destroys the myths there too; shows how badly we have got it wrong and the harm that was caused by Thatcher for which we still pay today.

The biggest myth (in my view) is that us in the UK live in a democracy.

If the last three years have taught us anything, it is that the Establishment is prepared to ride roughshod over any notion of democracy to preserve it's interests.

This will not end well, I fear.

Amazing isn't it.

The pretence has been blown apart yet some people want to run headlong into a foreign run power grab which will ultimately see them with zero voice at all. Maybe they could call it the People's Empire or something?

If we have no real control over our local politicians and can't seem to hold them to account over here without them pulling more and more rabbits out of the hat to thwart public will, then good luck with protesting outside Brussels when something crops up which the remoaners think matters. I've said this all along and it's a major reason why I very much knew what I was voting against.

They've already got big plans on how to reform democracy so another Brexit cannot happen again. Sounds very democratic doesn't it. Full steam ahead ob a federal state before there are any more hicups.

Letting people have a vote on whether they want a no deal Brexit would be a fantastic exercise in democracy. Ploughing ahead with a no deal Brexit without consulting the people would be the opposite.

I don't know if you noticed but we had one, any you lost.

By rights, you shouldn't even have a voice on the matter as, to restate it, - you lost!

You mean the referendum that took place 3+ years ago where the Leave side narrowly won by promising a better deal than we have now?

How is that a mandate for a no deal Brexit?

Ah, the classic Leaver's retort:
YOU LOST! YOU LOST!

The referendum was only advisory, anyway. Wish you'd understand that.

Vote Leave won so it’s up to them deliver what they promised. What they can’t do is move the goalposts and claim this is what people voted for.

Boris Johnson & Vote Leave campaigned promising a better deal. They accused people who warned about a no deal of scaremongering, talking the country down etc.

There’s no mandate for a no deal Brexit.

No it wasn't. There was a distinct promise to implement the result.
Would it have been advisory if remain had won? I don't think so.
