All the odd gasses that tend to escape from middle-earth did some terrible things according to reports. :smt118

A little geological background to this event.

There is one form of volcanic eruption called a nuée ardente/pyroclastic flow, where a cloud of hot gas and ash particles [around 300C is likely] flows downhill at speeds often over 100kph. Obviously it burns everything in its path. When it cools the layer of ash is left, still hot. One occurred in 1902 on Martinique. It swept over a town killing nearly 30,000.
As with many eruptions there had been a number of small but significant events suggesting that activity was probably imminent.

They won’t have to pay for a cremation I suppose

What happens if the families believe in burials.

I think they were buried alive weren't they? Under the ash? Or were they burnt to death first? Hopefully it was quick. Sounds quite painful. :(

It’s better to burn out than fade away.

From a report about the injured.
"New Zealand health authorities have reportedly ordered 1.2m sq cm of skin from the US in order to treat those injured: 27 of whom had burns to more than 30% of their body, with some having burns to 90-95% of their body. For context, experts say the palm of a hand is about 1.5% of the area of the body."
