I went to Hong Kong last October and there was a general acceptance that it wouldn't be like that for much longer. The protests were already well under way. I hit the usually vibrant Wan Chai on the last night and it was deserted and partially wrecked from the scuffles. Two very good friends, both ex-pats, have since gone elsewhere (New York and London).

Sad but inevitable. China needs to have a reckoning one day in the near future.

Unlikely the west will have much sway over the hong Kong situation. We can't even be bothered to impose human rights on saudi Arabia, which is a softer target. Economic expediency means we'll leave china alone. And who's going to risk an economic stand off and ultimately military hostility with china over it? No one.

The west, particularly europe, is seeing its influence recede.

The protests in Hong Kong has Western provacateurs and agitators. I reckon the Chinese authorities have displayed incredible and unbelievable patience so far in the face of outright violence and criminality by the western backed provacateurs and agitators.
