Philosophy

Post by Royal24s »

philosophy
fɪˈlɒsəfi/
noun
1.
the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.
2.
a theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour.
"don't expect anything and you won't be disappointed, that's my philosophy"
synonyms: beliefs, credo, faith, convictions, ideology, ideas, thinking, notions, theories, doctrine, tenets, values, principles, ethics, attitude, line, view, viewpoint, outlook, world view, school of thought; Weltanschauung
"I'd like to see your philosophy in action"

It arose in another thread that the discipline ( subject) of philosophy was pretty much discarded in the public education system with the introduction of comprehensive "education", although this has not of course been the case in public schools or in other developed nations.

It's a pretty important and very old one upon which all civilisation has relied and without it we certainly cannot effectively address or solve even simple dilemmas, because we would not know the tests we must apply to tell solid information from lies, mistakes or illusions.

I would deduce from much of what I have read in these forums that the subject is a complete mystery to many here, and I'm not hopeful that there'll be much interest from them except, obviously , to post a few swear words and personal insults .
So there's the first question isn't it ? That's the wonder of philosophy - it constantly asks questions which we must resolve before we can proceed, and it's already done it. The practise of posting meaningless drivel and swear words and wearing your own ignorance like a badge of honour certainly checks a couple of boxes in the somewhat simplifies definition reproduced above, BUT, does it amount to a philosophy ?
Does football, or socialism amount to a philosophy and, if so , are they well thought out and effective ones ?
That aside , who here has ever thought about it, and do people here hold to any philosophy ?
( actually they do, but they might not know it).

I'll start it off by saying that I'm quite into something called Scholasticism.

That's an old song isn't it ? I might be imagining it but I think I remember the original Adge Cutler singing it on TWW years ago.

Yet you thought it was important to tell everyone that . You could have just not read it as I imagine you have done with most books, poems and philosophies and left it at that, so since you never list other stuff you haven't read, this certainly means something, although that's probably more to do with psychology than philosophy , ( that's different tick), so we'll pursue the point when someone starts a thread on that subject.

Again, why bother to comment on that then ? Means fuck all to me what you think, and you must know that. I don't think you like discussions which go outside your comfort zone , which is okay if that's the way you look at things you find difficult , but you try to shut it down for everyone else in case you get shown up. That's just like the vikki pollard kid disrupting the class and stopping the clever kids from getting anything out of it.
You're still telling us your philosophy though. It's the philosophy of bitterness and jealousy but it's still a philosophy, albeit one on the very lower margin of human capacity, and more common in lesser creatures.

There's a question - are dumb creatures governed by or even following any philosophy ?
Bloody good question actually .
