When did it change from the holders being the first game to the hosts- 2006? Senegal beat France in 2002, was that the last time?

Yeah. Germany played Costa Rica, the same time that the previous champions had to qualify.

On a related note last night BBC showed or repeated a documentary about Ally's Army in 1978. It was, without doubt, the worst football-related programme I have ever seen in my life. The director was more concerned with being clever than telling us what happened, although there was a good bit right at the end, although it wasn't much of a surprise if you know how these things are normally put together.

Despite the hype, the Scotland line up in 1978 was awesome.

Their 82 squad had some good players as well, and Alan Brazil. :)

I was 11 years old and about to leave primary school. I also played in a basketball team.

We've been in every tournament that England's been in, it's just that we've been playing in the guise of other nationalities.

Northern Ireland played much the same Scotland (sans Pishtank) the following year at Windsor and beat them two to nil. In reality it could have been four or five we made them look pub league. It was the best I have ever seen Norn Iron play.

The best Final was France-Brazil in 1998, where both teams (in those days) automatically qualified, one as hosts and the other as defending champions.
As someone posted at the time, it made every other game completely irrelevant :-)
