So it came as moderate surprise to see River Plate had lost their semi-final to Al Ain on penalties, the fourth occasion in recent seasons the team representing the Copa Liberadores have lost to the minnows of Africa and Asia.

The drain of talent from South America to Europe over the past two or three decades has largely contributed to the drop in standard of South America football for sure, but nonetheless there should still be enough talent to overcome the TP Mazemba's and Al Ain's of Africa and Asia.

I enjoyed the one off finals in Tokyo just before Christmas every season in the 1980s when the likes of Liverpool, Forest and Villa who won the old European Cup played the likes of Penerol, Flemengo and Independiente. Even with the quality of English teams at the time, they struggled to keep up with the pace and skill of the South Americans. The matches were decent rare as well. Now, this championship us meaninglesss because of the chasm between the top European sides and every other continent.

People don’t give a shit about it and hence why no live coverage in this country.
