On pretty much every flight I have taken, the first officer has said in his PA introduction that people are recommended to keep their belts fastened throughout unless they need to move around.
Yet the majority of passengers ignore it, with the sort of results in the Air Canada flight.
Why on earth don't they make it a condition of carriage?

It's pathetic how you hear the chorus of click-click-click-clicks and exaggerated "Ahhhhh"s the second a plane lands, even though the light saying to keep belts on is still showing. People act like they've been held in a straight jacket for a week.

I must have been on different flights to you
Every speech by the cabin crew has been keep seatbelts fastened until the fasten seatbelt light goes off
Usually on for take off and landing
Is often put back on for turbulence
But you have to spot the turbulence at 533 mph

Extreme CAT is rare, just like being knocked down by a lorry or bus.
'Although the vast majority of cases of turbulence are harmless, in rare cases cabin crew and passengers on aircraft have been injured when tossed around inside an aircraft cabin during extreme turbulence'
On long flights, you are advised to move around to keep your blood circulating, you also have to go for a piss. There is a risk that if you are not wearing your seat belt there may be an episode of CAT and you may get injured. Normally you feel a few judders and that gives you time to fasten your seat belt. I'd say it should be left to the individual to decide.

If the individual is going to be thrown around and risk injuring other people, why let them decide? It's not up to them when and how strong turbulance is going to be. Belts should really be on whenever you're in your seat. It isn't exactly uncomfortable, unless I suppose a person is very fat or something.

If an individual is going to cross the road and risk getting knocked down, and those in the vehicle who swerved to try and avoid them a risked flying through the wndscreen, pedestrians should be made to walk and find the nearest zebra.

Why am I not surprised you didn't get that.
Yes people use the belts when told to and the sign is showing.
But this is CLEAR AIR TURBULENCE which even the flight crew cannot anticipate.
That's why they recommend you keep your belt on when seated.
In my experience most do not follow that advice.
Yes they will switch on the sign once it has started but before that damage is done.
The result is in extreme CAT as you see in the Air Canada flight.
I have experienced it, but not to the extent in this case.
Harm to passengers; harm caused by passengers; flight needing to be diverted at great cost and inconvenience to all.
So my question is why do they leave it advisory?
