For all the talk of loyalty pre 80's, how many of the players who stayed at one club a long time would have left had the clubs not held their registrations?
Even the great Bobby Moore was unhappy under Greenwood and would have left the Hammers earlier. In the end, he left when he was past his best and it was in the Hammers' interest to sell him.
Also, players moving on are now called mercenaries but those tags were never applied to the likes of Derek Dougan or Frank Large. They didn't move to earn huge sums, although they would have taken a 10% cut of any transfer which they did not request but loyalty, as such, really didn't exists other than the impression created by the fact that clubs held of players' registrations.
