Summer of Love (the real one): How Hippies changed t’world and t’ Grateful Dead

Post by Petingo »

I watched a great Documentary on BBC 4 at the weekend, about the rise of the 1960s counter culture, which reached full maturity in San Francisco in 1967.

Super soundtrack playing throughout....Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, The Who, Pink Floyd, Nat King Cole (I kid you not) and The Grateful Dead.

To be honest, I had never really listened to the Dead before, the superb Box of Rain being the only number I know, but I have been playing them a lot today and they were some band.

Well worth a watch on the iPlayer.

Episode 2 is on this weekend.
Alex Young, Howard Kendall, Andy King, Timmy Cahill, Dixie Dean and Mike Parry.....we'll never see the likes of them again.

Visited Haight Ashbury last year. Did the expected things-Hendrix apartment, Grateful Dead house etc.. No real evidence of any sort of alternative vibe any more.
It's quite a cool area with some decent bars but that's about it.
I was expecting to see freaks everywhere maaan.
All I saw was open top tourist buses 😂

Saw Woodstock in the cinema when it came out
Loved the music of that time
If in say San Francisco
Would have taken advantage of all this free love
May have even done some weed.

Then 70's was there and everything changed except the drugs maybe
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year

Recommend San Francisco, Sid-o? Among the few major American cities I've yet to visit!

100% mate.
Chinatown is epic.
Alcatraz of course.
Pier 54 for the sea lions 😂.. There's a really nice bar culture in the city
Did nearly 3 weeks in and around, then did a few days at lake tahoe.
Sonomas nice, also wine country is a 2 hour drive away.
The flight is a cunt of course but well worth it

Fine.
Twin peaks tavern is cool as fuck.

But then I'm not a massive homophobe so it was all good 👍
