Part 1

Post by Holden Mcgroyne »

A welcome addition to UK speech radio.

No adverts, no texts or gobshite callers to fill the airtime, just a few plugs for Times subscriptions.

Positives

Chorley at 10am is a welcome addition to the polemic output of LBC and talkRADIO,

Pienaar at drive

The American politics at 11pm

Portillo on friday

The overnight podcasts and best of the day replays

Negatives

Breakfast a complete no go (all 7 days)

Mariella Frostrup

The putty face Scotch lady who does weekend afternoons
There's no poem, just prose.

She's pretty awful in many ways. Massive entitled, attention seeker vibes.

Agreed even though it’s Murdoch owned.

The older I get the more tedious the say something controversial to provoke a reaction/get phone calls approach to speech radio gets. And a lot of Talk Radio’s output is exactly that so I don’t listen.

Times Radio totally different.

Times Radio has the potential to be as big as Radio Cleethorpes.
Talkforum is a truly appalling website.

Listen to this all the time now.

Radio with brains.

And remarkably apolitical considering it's one of Murdoch's family.

I really like Frostrup and haven't listened to my mate GOA and Paul for weeks. Maybe I've had enough of Andy's Chelsea angst usually ending up with the line, ''Well what can you do?'' and Paul's endless noble efforts to make smart references.

What an utter relief this station is if simply from the perspective of not having to listen to members of the great British public spouting all their predictable opinions.

What an utter relief not to have to listen to JWOTs and SJ going on and on and on.

Also, what a relief to have an alternative to LBC with its narcissistic presenters who just love the sound of their own voices, all, that is, except Matt Frei.

The only downside of TR is that they use the same news presenters and reports as TS and seem to have entered a phase where the people they hire have to have rather strange ways to pronounce their words, a bit like a cross between humans and those computer-generated voices.

And it still winds me up instantly when their sports presenters, the mouthpieces of a National Sports station which promotes the hell out of that fact, still make basic errors like today, when they called the T20 International a Test with another Test coming up in a few days. No its not, you ignorant, sloppy and unprofessional fucks. Get it right!

Great post tennisman

5 months in and it's settled down nicely. Matt Chorley is a vast improvement on the narcissists on LBC and talkRADIO at 10am. I'm still loyal to H and J, but tune in to Pienaar at 4. The contributors always look to inform rather than lecture and Tom Newton Dunn is probably the best informed journalist out there. The overnight podcasts are excellent

If I'm being picky, I don't much like the 4 day/3 day rota for the shows and the 10pm weekend presenter is a bit lightweight (sorry Kait)

All good points Holden and who knows, in a few months / weeks, I may get fed up with it. Giles Coren is a bit hyper and full of himself.

When he had Mark Dolan on with him the other day, I thought they were a bit insufferable.

Agree about TND but I like GdeP too.
