Any hint or rumour she was ever a juicer? Re: SPOTY
I don't think so, but who knows? That era was rife with drug-takers. I know we all thought Brits were squeaky clean, but quite a few have come out of the woodwork over time.antdad wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:16 pmAny hint or rumour she was ever a juicer? Re: SPOTY
Half the posts in this thread are off topic and just digs at others. Not clever and people should know better.
Gonna lock the thread and bin those posts. Well done.

That's better. Back open now. Apologies to those who had nice posts culled. Blame those who always go too far.

I think she possibly was, but so was everyone else in that era. A bit like lance armstrongantdad wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:16 pmAny hint or rumour she was ever a juicer? Bookies making someone a favourite. Whatever next…..Holden Mcgroyne wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 11:04 am The whole thing was a sham. Earps was odds on favourite 6 weeks ago even before nominations were announced
Ronnie O'Sullivan or, left field, Kevin Sinfield would have given it a shred of credibility.

I'm curious to know the criteria for making the shortlist.Jonathan wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 7:08 amBookies making someone a favourite. Is it creating a memorable sporting moment? Trying hard? Capturing the public's imagination? (Actually winning something isn't always the case, it seems…)

Re: SPOTY
I think it was a rather odd choice, and for a woman footballer to win two years on the trot is mystifying, but there have been plenty of people over the years awarded the SPOTY trophy who didn't actually win anything:Zambo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:31 am You keep telling em Piers.

- Mansell in 86
- Gazza in 90
- Damon Hill in 94
- Rusedski in 97
I guess Brits like plucky underdogs.

Re: SPOTY
I don't think it should necessarily be based on winning. If that's what they want, then change the award title. I just thought there were a lot of more worthy winners.

Re: SPOTY
Ideally it’s a winner of the biggest tournament in their sport ie Olympics, a major, part of WC winning team, F1 champion. a world champion.subsub wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:53 amI think it was a rather odd choice, and for a woman footballer to win two years on the trot is mystifying, but there have been plenty of people over the years awarded the SPOTY trophy who didn't actually win anything:Zambo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2023 8:31 am You keep telling em Piers.

Rory won, Ronnie won but not a major or World champion in their sports. Detorri didn’t win the Derby, the biggest flat race.
KTP and Josh won golds but it’s not the Olympics.
Mary lost in the final, Broad lost in the Ashes. It’s not really been the greatest year of sport.
