Because he's been a crap first minister and crap SNP leader.

The prospect of losing a no confidence vote in Holyrood loomed large over him.

While I have every sympathy for Humza regarding issues affecting his family, he's got no excuse for making such a dog's dinner of his job.

He seems to have quit because he cancelled the power sharing agreement with the Scottish Greens.

Which left the SNP as a minority government party in Holyrood. Humza has been ineffective in finding any alternative party to join the SNP in coalition, leaving him vulnerable to a no-confidence vote. All opposition parties in Holyrood intend to vote him down. The Alba party was the only one that could be a partner to the SNP but it consists of politicians who defected from the SNP because they opposed Humza's leadership.

Couple that with his inability to heal internal divisions of the SNP and he's toast. He'd lose the no-confidence vote so resignation is his only real choice.

He was unable to fulfil climate change targets that the SNP previously committed to in 2021, so scrapped said targets. This in turn angered the greens who considered it to be a deal breaker for them.

Couple that with Humza trying to appease SNP MSPs who disliked the greens anyway and he decides to scrap the power sharing deal too.

The way Holyrood and its voting sysyem was set up to ensure that the biggest party in parliament rarely gets an outright majority of seats so has to rely on power sharing deals with smaller parties to get legislation through.

Humza is not the brightest...his white, white, white speech went down like a lead balloon with the population of Scotland, the biggest surprise is he lasted 13 months in the job.
