Matt Forde looks like a Lib-Dem MP.

That's not a good look unless you're trying to become a Lib-Dem MP.
The real Boris Johnson died with Covid in hospital. He was replaced by a professional impersonator who has been avoiding talking to the press ever since.

Fordey has been ripping it up and getting rave reviews at Edinburgh for over a decade.

That cutting edge, eh?

I can't wait to hear his Harold Wilson and Stafford Cripps. Mike Yarwood must be shitting himself.

He'd be a natural at doing a Chris Biggins impression.

He literally hasn't.

The only rave reviews 'Fordey' gets is when he wins the daily race to the local pie shop.

“We meet in desperate circumstances,” announces Matt Forde, setting the tone for the hour of mordant political satire that follows. I’m not saying that Forde’s dissection of the state of affairs is gloomy in his show Brexit, Pursued by a Bear. But on your way home from the show you may wish to stock up on canned food, bottled water and sandbags.

Still, who can be too downcast about the risk of recession, the factionalism of our rulers, the lamentable state of the Labour Party and the corruption of the Conservative Party when there’s a really ace Boris Johnson impression on offer? I know, millions do one. Yet Forde’s is at the top of the pile for its mixture of SUDDEN bursts of attention-catching EMPHASIS jumping out from a slurry of barely articulated vowel sounds.

It’s hard, sometimes, to get real vitriol into your political comedy when you’re essentially a centrist. So desperate are our circumstances, though, that Forde’s common sense has become a kind of ribald radicalism. We may already know what we think about the fab four of contemporary British political satire: Nigel Farage, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn (plus special guest Donald Trump). Not only does Forde provide smart recaps and viciously good voices, though, he also fills us in on what we may not know: about World Trade Organisation rules, about the grim details of no deal, about the realities of medicine supply.

And, impressively for a comic from Nottingham appearing in the Scottish capital, he’s willing to offend his hosts just as much as he’s willing to call out racism in a Labour Party he sees as having also betrayed its Eurocentric nature.

Once or twice before, I’ve found Forde too much of a newspaper column made flesh. Here, the stakes are bigger, the aim is sharper and the laughs, when they come, cut deeper. He doesn’t see much more sanity in the “British public” than in their representatives. Yet, an adult-looking presence in this festival of larks in his navy blue suit and white shirt, Forde knows that cynicism is no salvation. He doesn’t have the answers. He does have some very funny voices and some very fine questions, though.
