Putin, who is clearly prepared to buddy up to anyone of any morals (eg Assad) to get where he wants to go, is playing this whole game. Irrespective of the hacking saga, it was well established that he wanted to see Trump elected.

Why?

Because he knew Clinton would know what she was doing. Whereas playing to Trump's ego clearly works. He wants/expects Trump to retreat inside the US borders and to desert Europe. Which is what he wants. He wanted us to leave the EU as well, because a Europe fragmented politically and militarily, will do him very well.
