So will Brenda Blethyn be punted from Vera and replaced by a bloke playing the role of a man who wants to be called Vera?

You're picking TV shows where the leads are obviously women; the argument doesn't work. Dr Who is an alien who reanimates, who are we to say it reanimates as a male every time, just because that's what you're used to?

Agree minx and I don't watch it.
Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline.

Man, Woman or Alien is does not matter at all.

It is still a shit TV programme. A kids TV show that adults should be embarrassed to admit they watch.

Aye, I think Jon Pertwee was the only one to use physical violence against his enemies .

No one in this thread ever watched Torchwood then? You would have had a proper meltdown!

The Twitter meltdown is a joy and the Daily Mail has melted in a pool of outrage.

Not before they've managed to find her in the nude in other shows.

I'm going to say that she should be given a chance and let's see how things are going to go. Not that it seems to be many fans of it on here anyway but yeah, I am openminded about this.

Hear fucking hear! I liked it when I was 8, but that was, well, oh twenty odd years ago.

Probably on a 2 series contract then replacement by another who "ticks the PC box" in the BBC sense of fairness.
So we are due a coloured actor (of either sex) to play the Doctor.
I am looking forward to a wheelchair-bound Doctor, so at least he will finally take on equally disabled Davros on a level playing field.

It will have to be a level playing field or else their wheelchairs will both just roll downhill.

Is this a good time to mention that I pissed in a urinal next to a David Tennant doctor at EMICON 2016? Thing was, when he went, I was sure he actually WAS David Tennant not a look alike.

You've got to laugh at the alt-righters suddenly taking interest in a children's television show just to vent their spleen at something so innocuous.

As someone else has just mentioned above, this Doctor Who is an alien who is presumably of an undefined gender. So what does it matter if a female actor portrays the character?

I couldn't give a toss.

I watched it (or rather, hid behind the settee) when I was a kid (Pertwee era). But it is, as you say, a kids programme. Any adult watching it needs to get a life.

That said, Jodie Whittaker is pretty hot. So I might give it a try :)
