Re: Currently Reading
Gone on a cycling roll recently. As per the 'Cycling' thread: https://talkforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f ... 5#p1280309
Chess player, amateur cyclist and author of the book that became the magnificent film, 'The Vanishing':
It reviews highly, did it match up to expectation? Oh yes it did. Not 150km in 150 pages in whatever translation. The Tour de Mont Aigoual is 137km and 148 pages in this translation.
Krabbé as the rider and narrator in this race with some old friends and foes and the mysterious rider with the Cycles Goff jersey. Tactics, techniques and psychology as attack follows attack, ponderings on Krabbé's earlier though late in life start to cycling racing and musings on well known cycling moments.
A page (err wheel) turner you can read in one sitting but constantly compelling. Definitely worth the hype. A Carlos 8/10.

Re: Currently Reading
And also on that link:
Autobiography completed in 1966 one year before he died on Mont Ventoux, but after becoming the first Brit to wear the yellow jersey and win a world championship.
Short as well, 180 pages, but also piles on the pace. Simpson as a northerner not big on waffling, brusque and to the point. Not afraid to give criticism, but also admit his immaturity in racing and his impetuousness of youth. He did think he'd win the world championship before he was 21, but achieved it at 27. Had a good career, won a few classics but tactics, he again regrets and lots of accidents cost him more titles.
Interesting is his going up Ventoux in a previous tour and barely managed it. No mention of doping, which he was speed loaded when died.
Quite fascinating as a picture of the time as a struggling pro, barely seeing his new wife and kids and having to race whenever for contracts to get coin, criteriums, six days and racing the day after the Tour finished elsewhere.
A Carlos 7/10.

Re: Currently Reading
MCS. Wilson was on with big Billy Gavin overnight and top man as always. Think after 3am.
Read a bit about Murray before, but now is more vocal on his site especially about Skripal investigations and not always right: https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/
So thought I'd order 'Murder in Samarkand':
Whilst waiting, thought I'd listen to the David Hare play with David Tennant from here: https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/books/mu ... adio-play/ Very enjoyable so far, though first time for years tried a play/audio book. Can't be doing them as get waylaid and have to keep listening back, so roll on the book coming, though will finish the audio eventually.

Re: Currently Reading
More cycling, but this time from the library:
Never heard of Dieter Wiedemann and unusually for me have not googled him. Early 60s East German cyclist who due to East German's banned from most races had the Tour of GDR, the Peace Race and the Olympics to race in. Politics at all times, as he was writing to a West German girl who came to see her family when a teenager, with the GDR local teams and 'Dynamo' the Stasi team getting most cyclists into competitions. Then, as a untied German team for the last time in the 1964 Tokyo games, there were cycling trials of both sides in err both sides and who came out best on points went. That was where Wiedermann defected and where up to now.
Not told as a story but in sections, the narrative is words from those involved, plus reprints of GDR newspapers and Stasi reports on Wiedemann and is he/is he not a good East German socialist?
Great so far, and anyone who likes sport politics, as linked for Jock on the Chess thread, this is great, the treatment of Boris Gulko amazing, but some proud people:

Reading Strangeways: A Prison Officer's Story by Neil Samworth.
Fuck, I'm amazed there's not daily riots at some of our jails.
Really hard reading. No wonder there's little substantial rehabilitation in many of our prisons for serious offenders.
They must come out completely traumatised.
Sure we want to punish those deserving of such treatment after hideious crimes, but I can't see many feeling rehabilitated after serving a few years in strangeways.
