Disappointing novel. While the concept is certainly relevant, I found the plot and characters cringeworthy and farfetched.

It’s weird, I had next to no interest in history when I was a kid, but the older I get the more I’m fascinated by it. Perhaps being older and wiser I’m more easily able to follow the threads from history to see the effect the events have on the modern day.

Fantastic so far. Forumers of a certain age will love the pop-culture references. The author wrote for Melody Maker, Q (when Danny Kelly was there) and various other music mags.

Brian Cox (the actor)'s autobiography - pretty good at times, but fair drones on and he's not too unlike Logan Roy, IMO (even if he says he's different) you can hear the ''fuck off'' etc when he's grumbling about some actor he didn't get on with. He obviously doesn't suffer people he sees as fools gladly etc, and he probably is a prickly character when he wants to be ; its an interesting read and I think he would be alright to speak to, as long as you didn't piss him off.

Jonathan Franzen - Crossroads.

I think I've read 3 of his books (Purity, The 27th City and one more I cannae think of the now). This book I believe is to be a trilogy through time. Starts of the early 70s with a pastor, wife and their 3 kids (around 17, 19, 21) probably similar to his dysfunctional family novels in the past. The husband isn't happy and fancies another woman ; the wife has the middle-age spread and fairly depressed although she has an interesting back story etc, and the kids are all quite different - one wants to quit college to join the army ; one is in to pot ; and the other is in a relationship with a young musician (every time they are mentioned I'm picturing Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham back in high school). Ain't no prude, but too much detail about the sexual acts etc - just fills pages, tbh rather than anything else. It is alright, its taken me about 2 months to finish it, so not loved it, but I'll no doubt read his next book or some of his older ones - still haven't read The Corrections!
