Finally finished The Game of Thrones (book 1) only took me 37 years and all 8) Good stuff but need a break from it for a minute before go on to book two. Saw this for cheap down in a second hand store last week. Loved the film for what it was but have heard the book is different and a lot better.

Raw Spirit - Iain Banks
Gave up half way through. The book is sold as Iain Banks going on an adventure round the distilleries tasting whisky. I was hoping for a bit of an adventure of trains, buses and planes, but when he says a few pages in that he's paid a friend to drive him around that kinda ruined the plot I had dreamt up. He rarely mentions the whisky and would rather drone on about back roads and how he drives them, on about the Iraq war, (yes, it was shite, but shut up about it, this book is meant to be about whisky).
His stories of his youth are not funny (we probably had to be there) and even then, someone dropping a pint glass isn't that funny due to being intoxicated.
And how much of a good socialist he is that he lives the dream in castles, has a speedboat, drives BMWs and Land Rovers. The type who batters on about being working class yet has 3 cars in the driveway living in the leafiest part of leafyville.
Thankfully was rented from the library so I didn't lose any cash on this.
2/10

A Visit From the Goon Squad - Jennifer Egen
A decent and enjoyable book, reaffirming my beliefs in reading after that last one I read. Put together like a series of short stories that all interwind into or out of each other's lives through tenuous links or family ties.

7/10

Now on to

So far very arty farty - an Icelandic viking chasing a fox.

Short stories from New York writers under 40. Stories are set all over the world.

Also, waiting on Capital - John Lanchester to come into the library hopefully next week.

I've a few of his books at home but I've not yet read any. The books were given to me recently by my neighbour.

Second time round i've read The Rats. Read it many years ago when i was a teenager and enjoyed it thoroughly. Bought it for 99p from Google Play a few days back.

It's a decent book. Quite dated though. You'll know what i mean if you read it. Some of the language, attitudes are firmly rooted in 70's Britain.

I know Herbert's a respected horror writer. I think I'll give his books a go. :)

I will, Peaches. :)

I enjoy horror and ghost stories at this time of year, which might have something to do with A Christmas Carol by Dickens. I played Jacob Marley in our primary school production, many, many years ago. :)
