Spain were my favourites to win the World Cup at the beginning of the tournament. But they have been somewhat uninspiring during the competition and can have no complaints losing to what appears at first glance to be an average Russian side on penalties.

Russia for their part it would seem have overachieved with this win over Spain. But it is less surprising when you consider that Vladimir Putin is overlooking the Russian team's progress. The great man's influence and inspiration on the Russian team can not be underestimated.
