If you just listened to that and not watched any of it, you would have thought England played the most smooth passing game of all time and were the new Barcelona under pep southgate, when in reality it was a dour game and if we weren't playing in it, everyone would be saying that was not a fun game.Reg wrote:At one point, one of the co-commentators remarked on the two different cultures (one honest, the other cheating).
At various points we had Walker, Sterling, Rose and TVLSDA on the pitch.
They really need to sort that out.
England have been more solid in defence than usual but then Walker nearly gave it all away with the type of stark error which previous England defenders have tended to make.
But in the final third, there have been slim pickings.
Then again, as I said in my blog post, they ALL play this way now. You could almost map out where the passes are going to go as the ball is worked out to a wide player, most of which can't cross a ball to save their lives. It's all very tedious.
The Brazil v. Mexico game was perhaps the only one I've seen where the play really opened up and it was a bit more 'end to end' and because of it, a breath of fresh air to watch.
So far, England have relied on penalties and height in the box. It may well be the same against Sweden. But from what I've seen, the Swedes don't rip up any trees creatively.
I reckon it will be another tight and potentially dour affair with both sides struggling to make chances.

I think Engerland would likely benefit in matching Sweden with a 4-4-2 by moving the tall Maguire alongside Stones in the middle and moving Kyle Walker to right full back and Trippier to the bench. Despite Tripper’s performances in the current system, Walker is a better player in that position.
Sterling should be retained in the midfield to overlap for Walker as he’s a fantastic winger and not a front man. Rashford could play up top alongside Kane in order to push the Swedish back four and create space for Kane and even Lingard to push on.
Problem with all of the above is who plays left mid. Too many right sided players unless you play Trippier right mid and put Radio Raheem overlapping the diver Young...

Would also go 4-4-2, but wouldn't include Sterling or Rashford. Sterling's head's not right after all the criticism and the tatt and the running shite. Rashford? Need someone who isn't going to squander chances. Personally I'd like to see Vardy and Kane upfront, but no one seems to havea scooby of the latter's strengths, and therefore no one plays to them. When you look at the 23, there is a lot of ordinaryness in it.

Agreed, it’s a limited and right sided squad. I think Vardy is injured so there isn’t much choice considering Radio Raheem is clearly not any good alongside Kane in a front two. Southgate needs to roll the dice because despite the hype, Sweden shouldn’t worry any team wanting to progress. Belgium, Uruguay, France and Brazil wouldn’t have any concern with the Swedes.

Re: SHIT SON, THINGS GOT REAL: COLUMBIA VS ENGLAND
I can see Southgate sticking with Howard "Sterling" The Duck, because I think Rashford has gone past the "what a great young talent" point, to the "does he do anything else apart from run towards to the corner flag" point, and, although Sterling is infuriating to watch, if, and its a big if, just half of what he tries comes off one match, he'll score a hat trick. Thats what makes him so annoying, because hes NEARLY there, hes not a complete cabbage, its just his timing is that fraction off.

I'd say Rashford is worth about three Sterlings , Kane is worth about ten of them.

To be fair, Rashford has never done anything in his career. Sterling scored 21 goals last season, so he is actually good. Kind of not sure why is Rashford is there anymore.

I'd go for the Stockholm Syndrome formation, where we all get dragged into some weird world of taking tS bollocks seriously, the terminal stage of which is phoning the Sports Bar. Having told an uncaring world "our" preferred line-up we could all judge how many Swedish players would make an England squad, or some fucking thing.Zambo wrote:Would also go 4-4-2
