Going on from this.

Have now set up tv/virgin v6 an ditched dvd as have one in upstairs tv, but with streaming this is now more or less redundant.

I have also set up amp which is plugged into v6 box and produces much better quality sound through my headphones than tv speakers, and is good for listening to music in particular. This does not cut out sound from tv as it would if I plugged into tv headphones socket.

Just one question left really, and that is I connect tv to v6 via hdmi cable into hdmi1 on tv. I have noticed that the hdmi3 port has (arc) after it, and reading up on it a bit it sounds like a connection if you have sound bar or theatre sound system which I haven't. However, as I use amp/headphones was wondering if connection should be v6 to hdmi3 with arc, or shouldn't, or doesn't matter.

Cheers.

It depends. If you watch a lot of blu rays then yes, because they have high resolution dolby sound settings that don't work with analogue or optical.

If not, you won't really see much of a difference.

Depends how much TV you actually listen to through headphones...if you mainly watch or listen to source material through the TV then ARC can be very convenient as you can control both amp and TV to switch on/off, alter volume and select source with the one remote rather than having to do so independently. As East has said ARC can't handle hi-res audio but that shouldn't matter as you're just using headphones, having said that you don't need a soundbar or full surround speaker set up to exceed your TV's audio capability...a pair of reasonable quality book-end speakers will do. You can get a pair of Wharfdale 9.0's for forty quid nowadays, you'll be surprised especially if listening to music as long as you can position them reasonably.

Oh and you need ARC compatible HDMI leads, most are nowadays tbf.
