Should I configure my Firewall to block, drop and ignore ping requests for security reasons or are there any logical reasons to allow?

Cheers.

Ignore (without sending back a response) would be best, I think, then whoever's pinging doesn't even know there's something there.

I use Zonealarm and it works great. It's a pirated version and I use it to block internet access for other pirated software on the computer checking to see if it's a legit copy or not. It has lots of inbuilt backdoor protections that hackers commonly use so apart from the reason I use it it does a job.

Windows firewall is bollocks.

Thanks for the replies.

Note there is a free download of ZoneAlarm. Any good?

It's usually described as free to download but after 7 days or so it'll probably expire as likely only a trial. If you want to pay for it I'd say go ahead as it is still a good piece of security software that works.

If you set it on learning mode there's an awful lot of clicking to be done to start with as it effectively blocks everything from everywhere until you give it permission. There are obvious exceptions of known non-threatening stuff which it intelligently lets through although tha's optional as well.

Mines all set up now and only asks for confirmation if there are software updates to programmes which it classes as new installations. Some may find this a bit of a pain and want everything to just sail through but that's the trade off between functionality and security.

Unless you have a penchant for frequenting demented websites windows firewall and defender are actually the best in town if you have Windows 10.

Theres no need to fuck about with it.
