On our US trip last year we were in a Walmart where semi automatic rifles were on sale.
The same store had a sign up near the confectionery area advising customers that Walmart might not be prepared to sell high sugar or high additive sweets to children unless an adult was with them.
Later, in Southern Carolina, we were chatting to a man who turned out to be the recently-retired Chief of Police in a small town. On the road in there were billboards advertising courses you could take which could certify you to carry a concealed weapon. I asked him why- if carrying a gun was supposed to deter others from attacking you- you would conceal it. He couldn't tell me.

I did enjoy how some Americans were honestly trying to argue that if the 1500 people in the crowd of the Bataclan had been armed then the killer would have been taken down quickly, rather than it all being even more chaotic and fatal.

Except in the US , where the argument will be produced that if all the people in the mosque had also had guns, they could have taken him out. Overlooking the implication that he would have had to kill a few before they realised what was happening. It's like they have a logic circuit plugged in the wrong way around.

The problem is, that particularly whilst guns are freely available, citizens have the right to protection, and when someone breaks into your home, a toilet brush or a broom isn't really going to offer much, if someone breaks in tooled up. I guess you could say hand over what they want, but you have no idea if that's enough. Moreover, with the pathetic sentences handed out, and the under resourced police force, how do we deter criminals.

Lot of people in the practical world use rifles . Most do no harm with them and until they do they might feel it's their decision to own one or otherwise.
You don't ban cars because someone deliberately drives into a bus stop.

As for Trump, and not only Trump, the perverted logic that says the best way to deal with morons with guns is to have MORE morons with guns, is a stain on a great and civilised country. And the NRA knows exactly how to play the money and the playing with the Second Amendment to keep it that way.
It is a childish notion of freedom to think it means "I can carry a gun. Never learned how to use one, but how hard can it be?" which means that the rest of us have LOST freedom having to live with the fear that you will use it.
