Why would she have had to walk away, he was the one playing away, surely she would have been successful in her petition if she was that badly treated.

You obviously think it's OK to smash someones skull in repeatedly with malice aforethought. We really live in a weird world these days, when that is deemed acceptable. You have to ask why all this shit didn't come out at the first trial. It was only when the dogooding human rights brigade got involved. She should have served life for that.
