I can't think of any other hack who's gone native quite as obsessively as Custis has. Sure, he's been sent to cover Manchester United, but the idea is to cultivate contacts etc and ensure good communication between club and paper whilst maintaining a degree of critical distance. Custis is like some deranged fan, embracing the same prejudces, the same enemies, the same bunker mentality. How he ever got a job on a national paper, even one as wretched as his own one, is a terrible indictment of journalism these days. His bruv must keep him on for their mum's sake.

His views depart from the fans in some instances - his Twitter feed is full of criticism of Robin van Persie and more recently Ashley Young - their great crime seems to have been not talking to him on one occasion, all Neil’s obsessive hatred for Ken Brown over the autograph incident transferred to them. His current love-in with Ed Woodward is also notably at variance with the supporters.
