Journalist Matthew Syed discovers Debordian theory. Guy Debord, author of The society of the spectacle, predicted this stuff YEARS AGO:

Doesn’t it explain how reality television sustains its appeal despite the lie in the title? If I was being arch, I would suggest that celebrity culture is the 21st century’s new religion. Where once we had priests to curate the central (and lucrative) illusion, now we have advertisers and PR consultants who “shape the story”. They give us heroes (and occasionally villains), parables, morality tales and gossip. And perhaps the most remarkable thing is how desperate people are to believe. When Schofield’s public image turned out to be somewhat fictitious, it was as if the fourth wall had been shattered; like Cypher, people wanted to be plugged back into the Matrix.

But isn’t it worth cutting through the nonsense from time to time? Isn’t it worth reminding ourselves that it’s all a game? Isn’t it worth remembering that daytime shows are fronted by character actors and screened by broadcasters who will do almost anything to sustain the illusion, even to the point of allegedly leaving an impressionable young man vulnerable to one of its stars, just as the BBC (albeit in more sinister circumstances) vacated its responsibility over Jimmy Savile?

I find the whole thing troubling, not just because high-profile figures so often get away with it (think of the dozens who will have behaved awfully without being caught) but what it says about human dupability. The older I get, the more I see the perils of mass illusions, the way we become trapped in mental cages whose bars we don’t perceive. This, though, is perhaps the subject of a future column. For the time being, let me suggest that a test of our maturity as a society is whether we can finally wake up and see celebrity culture it for what it is. Pure, unadulterated bullshit.”
