Taking back control of our borders.

Here’s a strange story.

Spain temporarily bans flights from Italy

Now, I was lead to believe that an EU country had no power to “control” its borders due to the fact Brussels dictated what they could do or not do at their borders.

Surely Msrs. Johnson, Farage, Give et al weren’t telling porkies, were they?

It could be, and this is shocking so brace yourself, that some EU nations have a reputation for ignoring the rules when it suits them. When we were in that parcel of infamy our gauleiters in Westminster made sure we slavishly followed every comma and clause of the EU rule book. The Mediterranean nations, not so much.

Or it could be that the gammon were fed a parcel of lies which they consumed mindlessly and the reality was we were always “in control” of our own borders.

No...no “could be” about it.

That was exactly the case.

No they weren't bending the rules.
There was a report on radio yesterday from the Italy/France border saying how the French were turning people away.
The EU laws give them rights to do that under certain circumstances.
But never mind the facts.
Or that people are prepared to give everything they won and risk their lives to cross the channel on a RIB, when in fact we are told they could just catch a ferry and be met with cash and the keys to a house...
The "open borders" myth is beyond recall.

Banning flights isn't closing borders is it ?
In any case they can derogate in certain cases such as this

EU members are allowed to introduce border controls. But only in emergency situations and they can only be temporary. So the idea that the UK had control of it's borders, is nonsense. People need to accept that we have left the EU, for the debate to move on.

You are confusing Schengen and the EU
We had control of our borders.
If we didn't, WTF are the coastguard and Borders Agency doing every day in the channel?

No confusion at all. We did not have ultimate and full control of our borders.

For the most part, the coastguard and Borders Agency seem to ferrying illegal immigrants into the UK.

There seems to be a real difference of opinion here

It's clear that any country can and should be able to close its borders (and even areas within its own territory) in an emergency.
Aside from special circumstances, a non-schengen member state would be obligated to allow free movement of law-adbiding EU citizens.
So we didn't have full control of our borders.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens the migrant camps start to open up in France again. All the intra-EU agreements expire end of the year and replacing them doesn't seem to be on the agenda.
