I try not to be snobby about them, and as a Gaelic speaker (god that doesn't half sound pretentious) but grinds the gears a bit hearing some of them pronounced badly too or basterised. Still, it's better than nothing.

Cailean has about 20 different spellings now and pronunciations.

I understand a lot of folk can struggle saying them ans they are not used to the letter system, so I don't blame folk for mispronouncing etc. The Sh,Mh, Bh or other Gaelic/Irish ortho can be complicated - and often the rules aren't that simple d e.g Domhnall (you'd think would be Doh-vul - if Mh is 90% the time a V, but it's pronounced more like Dohll or Doll with a wee short h in the middle).

Hamish is basically the anglicized version of addressing Seumas - you would say ''Halo a Sheumais (pronounced Hamish)'' and Máiri is Hello a Mháiri - (Varry) yet you'll get folk spelling their name Mhairi and calling themselves ''Mahri'' rather than ''Varry,''.

Not keen on names like Olly/Oli ; Ayda ; Jayden. You don't need to go all Nigel, or the correct spelling of a Gaelic name ; but names like John, David, Stephen are also fine enough and same they are probably going extinct - or will come back in 20 years!

Farquhar, especially if his name is Farquhar Farquharson.

Actually my mistake, I don't think Michaela is a Gaelic name.

A friend of mine who 's job involved interviewing parents in the education department met on family.
The parents pronounced their daughter's name as WYVONNY.
The records showed she was calle Yvonne!
