A lot of people in Hong Kong preferred life under British rule. This has been on the cards for a while now.

Pretty much .... Well actually I think everyone preferred British Rule. It was very much a British place and very anti commie, but it was subject to a leaseback and had to be handed over on a certain day. Prior to that a huge number of people - practically everyone who could afford it - left and relocated elswhere in the world.
There was no appetite for return to China on anyone's part - it was dreaded, but it was unavoidable.
In an instance of what Uri Geller would call synchronicity I answered someone's question here last night that I'd been in the Army many years ago, and in fact I was based there for a while at a place strangely called Aberdeen. It was a fantastic place in those days actually .

Trump has capitulated to China over Hong Kong yesterday and Johnson has taken a vow of silence. If you wanted evidence that China is the predominate economic superpower in the World there it is. 20 years ago the US and UK would be queuing up to denounce this, now they keep quite hoping China won't hurt them.

Europe is trying to pick up the pieces from the latest economic setback. The USA and UK are staring down the barrel of their own sociocultural implosion and are far too busy to care about the rest of the world's problems. The USA is busy reducing its military presence outside it's own borders.

China knows this and that's why it's taking action in hong Kong. They know nothing major will happen to them. If Russia can survive post-crimea sanctions then an economic titan like China wont feel the burn from this.

Have you ever heard of the Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution? Not to mention Tianamin Square.

They lifted millions out of poverty all right. And dumped them straight into mass graves.

In retrospect my visit to Tianamin Square was strange. I was ferried through hoards of people, mostly Chinese tourists, and the historical scope given by the guide was limited. She ignored my question about the 1989 protests. Yikes...

Still, I suppose it does give us another glimpse of what's possible under a socialist system, and something to work towards.

Potentially 300,000 Chinese being allowed to come to the UK. That’s going to upset those on here who don’t like different coloured faces or perhaps they count as white so all is ok.
