Can't believe Terminator 2 hasn't been mentioned yet.
I'm not into sci fi, but that is a great film.
Total Recall pretty good as well.

Nearly 30 years old, and I've not seen CGI since that can touch it.

I just watched 'Ad Astra'. Not bad.

Are you Adrian Durham? Not EVERY casual opinion has to be a battle, with a "winner" and a "loser".

Jeez, perhaps that didn't come out how I intended. The only point I was making is that CGI is so good and immersive nowadays you don't really notice it.

My point was that IN MY OPINION the CGI in T2 was appropriate, and stunning, and it's a typically Durham thing to argue with someone else's opinion.
IN MY OPINION most CGI nowadays is as if a Tom and Jerry cartoon had $5 million thrown at it, and and it gives me a headache. In order to bulk out the running-time two planes collide over Paris and smash into the Eiffel Tower and the passengers are all turned into chips that run around on tiny legs, and all meet up and turn themselves back into a Jumbo-jet ... or some fucking thing.
And then the hero jumps from the ground to the top of Mount Everest, doing a double-twist, and the explosion never looks quite right.

Quite happy to argue about it now...
Sure there is plenty of inappropriate and poorly executed CGI and the tech used in T2 was groundbreaking at the time. But that was at the time and there were plenty of limitations of it's use shown in the film that I'd be happy to point out. Cameron knew when to use it sparingly to achieve the most dramatic impact (as he did in The Abyss) but what you think was pure CGI could've easily been a mix of the practical and CGI or just plain old camera trickery which is a testament to the skills of the creative team.
CGI today can be spectacular. So spectacular that you almost never notice it in the first place which is the point you took umbrage with. You only notice the bad stuff, so you assume that CGI today isn't very good, without realizing that most of it is so good it slips right past you. See the last few seconds of the youtube vid above where they admit they could only solve some problems using a paint program, in other words doctoring the film frame by frame as they would've done manually years before, there's your magic CGI for you circa 1991.

Aliens is the best movie of all time. I really quite enjoyed 2010 (sequel to 2001) but I'm probably the only one. Only watch Bladerunner 2049 if you've watched the first one. They are both great. On the Trek debate surely everyone knows the even numbered ones are the best..
