...they've been told to by Ofcom and usually youngsters don't clammer for the BBC/licence fee to be abolished. Bruce @ 72 has had a decent enough run and well over retirement age, folks will get over it or listen elsewhere.
Shaky Joe is 8 years older. I don't think you should be getting rid of people based solely on age. Judgement should be purely on performance v job objectives. Good old Ken was still blasting it out, and listeners seem to still like him. The biggest insult of course is being replaced by an absolute twanger.
Radio 2 can hire who they like, but I think Ken Bruce is a great presenter, and I'd much rather listen to him than Vernon Kay or Michelle Visage, but I guess they feel they know what they're doing…
Well no, they haven't got a clue what they are doing. They couldn't even be bothered to tell him why he was being shunted after 30 odd years of loyal service.

You love playing around with the facts don’t you. He chose to leave, that’s it, his choice, he didn’t want to stay. All the BBC have done is decide his last time he will broadcast. If he had resigned while working for commercial radio he wouldn’t have even been able to say goodbye.Gone on the same day.

Sad to see Ken go myself, enjoyed his show but he wanted to broadcast elsewhere.

Not playing just stating.

He said: 'I was called in at 12.30 and told that my final show would be a week today and wasn't given any real reason that I understood.

Oh come on Zambo, I know you are not that stupid.

He’s has the biggest show on the station. Did he really think he could broadcast all the way up until he leaves, be part of TV ads for his new station, and then come the last Friday of his contract he just picks up his shows and starts again on Monday morning on GHR. Ken really isn’t that naive is he ?

That’s how it works for key personnel, doesn’t matter how long you have been there. The BBC have been more than generous letting him carrying on broadcasting and having one final week.

BBC radio listeners are switching off in their droves and tuning into alternative stations after older DJs were replaced with younger ones, according to latest figures.

It comes after Paul O'Grady, Steve Wright, Vanessa Feltz, Craig Charles, Steve Wright and Ken Bruce all left Radio 2 over the past six months as part of a mass exodus on the station.
Bizarre. Why is the BBC obsessed with appealing to younger audiences? Young people don't watch cable TV or listen to the radio and instead prefer YouTube, Netflix and Disney+.
Isn’t that where they can generate more revenue and a justification for its ongoing service? Young people can still watch dramas, soaps and news programmes. If they focus on a 60+ demographic, the target audience is very acute and what when they die out? What then?
... But they don't, though. Unfortunately, kids aren't interested in the Beeb.

Oh come on Jonathan, you're not that stupid. He has a contract until the end of March, which makes your comments invalid.

It's clear to see to those with half a brain, that the BBC have been dumping employees of a certain age. It is their current MO, and Bruce is the last one in the list.

Listeners of Radio 2 have never been in the young set the general appeal is to the middle aged and oldies.

They have fucked up with this.

Nothing invalid whatsoever. They are honouring his contract by paying him. It doesn’t mean he has to sit behind a microphone for the BBC if they don’t want him to. Look up “gardening leave” to help you understand how it all works.

He chose to leave. Didn’t want to sign a new contract. BBC were not getting rid of him yet. They were caught with their trousers down. At his age, a pot of gold was probably very enticing and, of course, no one knows what he earns now.

Listeners evolve and die off so they have to move the music and presenters along to attract those to replace them. They dumped all their 50’s music shows as not enough left who would want to hear that on the radio. 60’s music is much more iconic but even that in time will only be heard on specialist shows.

I agree the fucked it up though, they should have got in earlier by renewing his contract and not assuming.

The Beeb should capitalise on their archives and open access. Content like this is more important for younger generations than rapper Zipp-A-Dee Zap Zoop or whatever on Radio 2.
