Not at all ant, it is a great film. You just see different if read the book then see the film characters in your mind differently. You never have to read the books before but I like to if a decent book.

'The Shining', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', 'A Clockwork Orange' for example, read before seeing. But even not, they are fantastic films.

'Catch 22'. That is a catch 22, the book is sublime as is the film. 'Naked Lunch' did an OK adaptation, ditto 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', but the books are better.

Do not read 'Heart of Darkness' though if expecting 'Apocalypse Now', though both are excellent. :D

Most queer how I managed to read so many books as a younger man during prime sex, drugs and rock and roll time, but hey we overcome.

So bad now and so many books on the shelf needing reading. :?
I tried reading Catch-22 but couldn't get into it.
You couldn't get into the book because you hadn't seen the film? Then you couldn't figure out the film because you need to read the book first?

Oh, sorry. Neither. My post relates only to the book, which I started reading but didn't enjoy it.

Never heard of it. But looking it up, seems similar to 'Home to Roost' with Thaw and Dinsdale.

Famously was visiting family in Sunderland and was seen buying fags in a corner shop by a local newspaper reporter who asked him for a quote, "Nice to see the old home town again then, James?"
"Fuck off," replied the charmer, "It were a shitehole when I left and its an even bigger shitehole now"

If you enjoyed that, make sure you check out Sean Bean in Sharpe. An old flatmate of mine used to love it when it got repeated. Got me into it as well. Brilliant television.
